3 in 5 SMEs experienced a cyber attack in 2017 – what can you do to protect your business?

Cybersecurity is a primary concern for many businesses; however, the latest figures from a Government National Cyber Security Programme survey suggest UK businesses aren’t doing enough to protect themselves. Nearly half (46%) of UK businesses experienced a cyberattack in 2017 – with 66% of these happening to SMEs, highlighting the need for better data protection practices – especially from smaller businesses.

Also highlighted in the study were the primary causes of cyberattacks. Unsurprisingly fraudulent emails comes up on top (72%), with viruses (33%) and ransomware (17%) following closely behind.

The rise in cyberattacks has been put down to a number of factors, including the rise of BYOD (bring your own devices) and a lack of robust IT usage procedures being put in place.

Thankfully, there were also some more promising stats to be drawn from the survey. 58% of SME business owners stated that they’ve looked into or are currently seeking further advice on cybersecurity.

Ultimately, protecting your business needn’t be time-consuming or complicated. With this in mind, here are some of our top tips for enhancing your businesses’ security:

1. Getting a backup system in place – A properly managed backup system is essential and this is arguably the most important step for ensuring your business is protected. Cyberattacks can strike at any time – fortunately, a secure backup system ensures the safety of your data and files, meaning you can restore your network quickly and easily. Just be sure to perform regular maintenance checks!

2. Strong passwords – Having password policies in place will help you and your staff make sure passwords are as secure as possible. From updating passwords quarterly, to using multiple letter cases, there are many ways to strengthen your passwords and while these best practices can be a bit tedious, they may well save you from a cyberattack!

3. Having a firewall installed – Simply put, make sure you have a business-grade firewall and that it is correctly configured.  This will make your system more secure from intrusion.
