Remote working is on the rise in the UK, with statistics from the ONS predicting that 50% of us will be allowed to work away from the office by 2020. Whilst remote working certainly has its perks, it can also put a business at risk if the correct staff training and procedures aren’t put in place.

Alarmingly, a recent study from Cybsafe found that 24% of UK businesses have not implemented basic security precautions for working remotely and a further 30% don’t have any measures in place to restrict file access.

With this in mind, we’re rounding up some of our top tips for keeping your businesses’ work secure, no matter when or where your employees are working:

  1. Never use public Wi-Fi for sensitive information
Wi-Fi related hacks are on the rise, with many happening due to unsecure public connections. While the local coffee shop Wi-Fi is usually fine for browsing the internet and playing Instagram catch-up during your lunch break, only connect to networks you trust when handling sensitive work information.
  2. Don’t leave your devices unattended
Lost or stolen devices are one of the most common causes of business security incidents. If you’re working in a public area, don’t leave your devices unattended and make sure you have a secure way of transporting devices to and from the office.
  3. Encrypt your files and emails
Encryption and robust management of corporate emails and files is a must for any business – no matter how big or small. There are many credible encryption software tools about – but if you’re not sure where to get started, here’s a useful guide.
  4. Ensure passwords are strong
We hate to nag on about password hygiene, but it is important! Strong passwords are the foundation for ensuring your device and files are safe.
  5. Ensure your anti-virus is up-to-date
Whether it’s your own device or the businesses’, you should have anti-virus software installed. Before leaving the office, make sure that your anti-virus and any other web filtering, firewalls, device encryption and other preventative software is up-to-date.
  6. Be aware of visual theft!
Hackers aren’t just online; they could also be just over your shoulder. Be extra vigilant if you’re working in a public place or on-the-go, where your sensitive information could be in sight.
  7. Implement remote working policies
As mentioned earlier, a worrying amount of businesses’ don’t have policies in places for employees who want to work remotely. However, by establishing policies with some of the above tips, your employees will be better educated on best practises for working remotely.
